Galveston (TX) Alumni Chapter History
The vision to establish a local chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi in Galveston was born from the commitment and foresight of two remarkable men—the late T.D. Armstrong, a respected businessman, and the late Cornelius A. Harris, a distinguished educator. Both were proud members of the Houston Alumni Chapter, yet their deep roots in the Galveston community ignited a desire to bring the Fraternity’s ideals closer to home. Understanding that a chapter required more than a dream, they set out to find others who shared their purpose. Their efforts led to the formation of a noble coalition that included James E. Coleman, Edward J. Crockett, William Jackson, A.W. MacDonald, Charles Moore, and Dr. Leon A. Morgan—each of whom had also pledged through the Houston Alumni Chapter. Together, these eight men laid the foundation for what would become a powerful beacon of Brotherhood and service on this tropical island.
With the support of the Houston Alumni Chapter and the Grand Board of Directors, the Galveston Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi was officially chartered on December 2, 1950. This historic moment marked not only the birth of a chapter, but the beginning of a legacy rooted in excellence and purpose. All of the charter members were leaders—either educators or business professionals—whose influence rippled through Galveston and its neighboring communities. They brought to the chapter a profound sense of purpose and pride, committing themselves to the Fraternity’s guiding principle of Achievement. In addition, they established Scholarship, Charity, and Brotherhood as the cornerstones of the chapter’s mission, ensuring that their work would uplift future generations.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of Galveston, this chapter was more than a response to geography—it was an answer to a call for leadership, unity, and progress. These founding brothers didn’t merely bring Kappa Alpha Psi to the island; they wove its values into the cultural and civic fabric of the community. Their legacy endures in every scholarship awarded, every act of service rendered, and every brother uplifted. Through their efforts, the Galveston Alumni Chapter remains a living testament to what can be accomplished when visionary men come together with a shared purpose and an unshakable commitment to achievement.
